EDITORS COMMENTS
This beautiful and historic photograph captures the moment of love and tradition as Edward, Prince of Wales, exchanges vows with Princess Alexandra of Denmark in St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle on March 10, 1863. The young couple, both radiant in their wedding attire, stand before the altar surrounded by the grandeur of the chapel and the presence of their families and esteemed guests. Prince Edward, later known as King Edward VII, was the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. His marriage to Princess Alexandra, the eldest daughter of King Christian IX of Denmark, was a significant union that strengthened the ties between the British and Danish royal families. The marriage also marked the end of a long period of mourning for Queen Victoria following the death of her husband, Prince Albert, in 1861. The wedding ceremony was a grand affair, reflecting the opulence and grandeur of the Victorian era. The bride wore an elegant gown of ivory satin, with a long train and a veil of Brussels lace, while the groom wore the uniform of a Field Marshal of the British Army. The wedding procession made its way through the streets of Windsor, drawing large crowds of well-wishers. The marriage customs of the time were faithfully followed, including the bride and groom drinking from a common cup, symbolizing their shared future and their commitment to each other. The newlyweds then rode in a carriage through the streets of Windsor, waving to the cheering crowds before returning to Windsor Castle for their reception. This photograph is a poignant reminder of a significant moment in royal history, capturing the joy and tradition of a royal wedding in the heart of Windsor Castle.
