EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures a young and dashing Edward VII, the future King of Great Britain and Ireland, in his naval uniform as the Prince of Wales on 1st July 1860. Taken by the renowned photographer Frederick Hollyer, working under the studio name of Mayall, the image was captured during Edward's time as a midshipman in the Royal Navy. Edward, born on November 9, 1841, was the eldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. His naval career began in 1852, when he joined the HMS Birkenhead at the age of 10. This photograph, taken when he was 19, showcases his youthful charm and confidence. The Prince of Wales' naval career was cut short due to his father's ill health, and he was appointed as the Commander-in-Chief of the British Fleet in 1866. However, his love for the navy remained a lifelong passion, and he was known to have a deep understanding of naval matters. This photograph, taken during a significant period in Edward's life, offers a glimpse into his early years and his dedication to his country's military. The image is a testament to the historical significance of the Prince of Wales and his role in the British monarchy. The photograph, which is a carte-de-visite (CDV), is a small, rectangular print mounted on a thin card. CDVs were popular in the mid-19th century and were used to exchange as personal mementos or to distribute as promotional materials. This particular CDV, with its stunning image of a young Edward VII in naval uniform, is a valuable historical artifact that offers a unique insight into the life of a future monarch.
