EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures Edward VII, the King-Emperor of the British Empire from 1901 to 1910, during his visit to Marienbad, Bohemia (now the Czech Republic), in 1906. The King is seen relaxing in the elegant surroundings of the town's famous colonnade, accompanied by Sir Stanley Clarke and Major Ponsonby. Marienbad was renowned for its curative waters, and Edward, known for his love of luxury and health resorts, sought the benefits of the local spa treatments. Sir Stanley Clarke, a British diplomat and courtier, served as the King's equerry from 1892 to 1900 and later as his private secretary from 1900 to 1905. Major Algernon Bertram Freeman-Mitford Ponsonby, a British Army officer and courtier, was the King's equerry from 1905 until Edward's death in 1910. Both men were long-standing companions and confidants of the monarch. The photograph, taken in the summer of 1906, provides a fascinating glimpse into the leisure activities of the British royalty during the early 20th century. The King, dressed in a light summer suit and straw hat, appears relaxed and content, while Sir Stanley Clarke and Major Ponsonby engage in conversation nearby. The elegant architecture of the colonnade, with its intricate ironwork and ornate columns, adds to the refined atmosphere of the scene. This historical photograph is a testament to the opulence and grandeur of the Edwardian era, as well as the importance of health and wellbeing in the lives of the wealthy and powerful. It offers a captivating glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of elegance, luxury, and the pursuit of health and happiness.
