EDITORS COMMENTS
In this charming photograph, taken at Balmoral in 1902, we find King Edward VII (1841-1910) surrounded by his grandchildren. Seated next to his father, the monarch is flanked by his eldest son and heir, Prince of Wales Edward VIII (1894-1972), and his third son, Henry, Duke of Gloucester (1900-1974). To the King's right, his eldest daughter, Princess Mary (1897-1965), and his fourth son, Albert George, Duke of York (later George V, 1895-1952), complete the scene. Edward VII ascended to the throne in 1901, following the death of Queen Victoria. He was a popular monarch, known for his love of life and his modernizing influence on the British monarchy. His grandchildren, who were born during his reign, were the future Edward VIII, Henry, Mary, and George V. This image captures a moment of familial warmth and happiness, with the King affectionately interacting with his grandchildren during a leisurely outing at Balmoral Castle. Balmoral, located in the Scottish Highlands, was a cherished retreat for the British royal family. The King and Queen, along with their children and grandchildren, spent many summers there, enjoying the picturesque scenery and the opportunity to escape the pressures of court life. This photograph is a testament to the close bond between Edward VII and his grandchildren, as well as the idyllic atmosphere of Balmoral during this period in royal history.
