EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the moment when young King Edward V, aged just twelve, makes his grand entrance into London on June 20, 1483. Accompanied by his powerful uncle, Richard Duke of Gloucester, the future King Richard III, Edward's journey to the capital marked the beginning of his reign following the mysterious disappearance of his brother, King Edward IV. Edward's entrance was meant to be a triumphant display of royal authority, but the ominous presence of his uncle cast a dark shadow over the occasion. Richard, who had been appointed Protector of the Realm during Edward IV's illness, had seized the opportunity to seize the throne for himself, and many believed that Edward V had been secretly murdered in the Tower of London shortly after his arrival in the city. Despite the uncertainty surrounding Edward's fate, the young king is depicted here in regal attire, wearing a rich velvet robe embroidered with the White Rose of York and the fleur-de-lis of France, symbols of the House of York and the House of Lancaster, respectively. Edward's horse is adorned with a cloth of estate, and he holds a scepter in one hand and a globe in the other, symbolizing his role as king and his responsibility to rule over his kingdom. Richard, dressed in the robes of a duke, rides beside Edward, his expression unreadable. Some historians believe that Richard may have orchestrated the image of the young king's entrance to bolster his own claim to the throne, while others argue that he genuinely believed he was acting in the best interests of the realm. This photograph offers a tantalizing glimpse into one of the most intriguing episodes in English history, a time of political intrigue, power struggles, and the uncertain fate of a young king.
