EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the regal presence of King Edward III of England, as depicted in an 11th print from the series "The Reigns of the English Monarchs" by an unknown artist. Edward III (1312-1377), the son of Edward II and Isabella of France, ascended the throne in 1327 at the young age of 14, following the deposition of his father. This print, created around the mid-19th century, portrays Edward III in the prime of his life, with a full beard and an air of authority. Edward III is shown wearing the Imperial State Crown, a magnificent diadem adorned with precious stones and gold, which has been used in the coronation of English monarchs since the 14th century. In his right hand, he holds the sceptre, a symbol of royal power and authority, while in his left hand, he holds the orb, a symbol of the monarch's role as the temporal and spiritual ruler of the realm. The print also highlights the rich history and tradition of the English monarchy, as well as the importance of the crown and its regalia in the ceremonial and symbolic aspects of the monarchy. Edward III's reign, which lasted from 1327 to 1377, was marked by military successes, including the victories at the Battle of Crecy and the Battle of Poitiers, as well as the establishment of the Order of the Garter, the most prestigious order of chivalry in England. This print is a testament to the enduring legacy of King Edward III and the rich history of the English monarchy, and serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving and celebrating the past for future generations.
