EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts Edward II, the English monarch who reigned from 1307 to 1327. Edward is shown in full regalia, wearing a richly embroidered robe adorned with ermine fur, and wearing a diadem adorned with precious stones and pearls. In his right hand, he holds a scepter, a symbol of his royal authority, while his left hand rests on a brooch that bears the image of the crucifixion. Edward's face is full and smiling, reflecting a sense of confidence and charisma. Edward II's reign was marked by significant events in British history. He ascended to the throne at the age of 14 following the death of his father, Edward I. His reign was marked by political instability, including conflicts with the barons and the Scottish and Welsh rebellions. Edward's favoritism towards his gay lover, Piers Gaveston, also caused controversy and contributed to his eventual downfall. Edward was ultimately deposed in 1327 and succeeded by his son, Edward III. This photograph print, from Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to the medieval period and allowing us to connect with the history of Edward II and his reign. The intricate details of his clothing and the regal bearing of his posture serve as a reminder of the grandeur and complexity of the medieval court. The image is a valuable historical resource, providing insight into the visual culture of the time and the representation of royalty during the late Middle Ages.
