His Flying Ship design, which he began working on in 1886, was a radical departure from the heavier-than-air aircraft that would come to dominate the skies in the 20th century. The Flying Ship was envisioned as a large, winged vessel that could carry passengers and cargo through the air, using a series of fans to generate lift.
