EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 1779 print by Cooke's depicts a general view of Edinburgh, the historic capital city of Scotland. The image captures the breathtaking beauty of the city as it was over 240 years ago, with the iconic Edinburgh Castle standing proudly atop Castle Rock. The castle, which dates back to the 12th century, has been a symbol of Scottish history and identity for centuries. The print also reveals the layout of the city below, with the Old Town and New Town districts visible. The Old Town, with its winding streets and tenements, contrasts sharply with the more ordered grid pattern of the New Town. Leith, the historic port town, can be seen in the foreground, connected to Edinburgh by the Leith Bridge. At the time this print was made, Edinburgh was still recovering from a devastating fire that had swept through the city in 1741, destroying much of the Old Town. The fire left thousands of people homeless and caused extensive damage to the city's buildings and infrastructure. However, the resilient people of Edinburgh rebuilt their city, and by the late 18th century, it was once again a thriving center of commerce and culture. This print offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, allowing us to imagine what life was like in Edinburgh during the late 18th century. It is a reminder of the rich history and enduring spirit of this remarkable city.
