EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, dated 1803, showcases an intriguing assemblage of marine life, with a focus on two distinctive fish species: Echeneis and Echinorynchus. The Echeneis, also known as Suckerfish or Sharksuckers, are members of the Echeneidae family, characterized by their unique ability to attach themselves to larger marine animals using their disc-like sucking discs. The Echinorynchus, represented here by the Echinorynchus Phocae, is a type of remora, a family of fish that are commonly known for their symbiotic relationship with larger marine creatures. Surrounding these fascinating fish are several other intriguing marine species. The Remora, which the Echinorynchus is a part of, is depicted in its entirety. This shark sucker, with its flat, disc-like body and large dorsal fin, is easily recognizable. Nearby, the Aluconis, Candidus, Lineolatus, Salmonis, and Attenuatus are also illustrated. The Aluconis, or the Spotted Remora, is a small, spotted remora with a similar body shape to the Echinorynchus. The Candidus, or the White-spotted Remora, is characterized by its white spots and elongated dorsal fin. The Lineolatus, or the Striped Remora, boasts distinctive stripes along its body. The Salmonis, or the Salmon Remora, is a remora with a salmon-colored body, while the Attenuatus, or the Longnose Remora, has a long, pointed snout. This charming print, with its meticulous attention to detail, offers a glimpse into the rich and diverse marine world of the early 19th century. It serves as a reminder of the intricate relationships that exist between various marine species and the fascinating adaptations that enable them to thrive in their environments.
