This print showcases the intriguing world of the Earwig (Forficula auricularia), an ancient insect species belonging to the Dermaptera order, famously recognized for its distinctive pincer-like appendages. The image not only highlights the adult Earwig, but also its tiny, newly-hatched young and eggs, providing a rare glimpse into the insect's life cycle. The Earwig's historical significance dates back to ancient Greece and Rome, where it was believed to have the ability to crawl into human ears and cause discomfort. However, modern science debunked this myth, revealing the Earwig's harmless nature. The adult Earwig in this print displays its winged form, which is not commonly seen as the insect is often mistakenly thought to be wingless. In reality, Earwigs have two pairs of membranous wings that fold under their abdomen when not in use. The newly-hatched young, or nymphs, can be seen in their wingless form, gradually growing into their adult form. The Earwig's eggs, laid in a small, protective casing called an ootheca, are also visible in the print. The ootheca, which resembles a small, brown, cylindrical object, is attached to the underside of the female's abdomen until the eggs hatch, ensuring their protection.
