The image shows Eisenhower, dressed in a suit and tie, descending the aircraft stairs at London Airport, surrounded by a crowd of officials and onlookers. The President's arrival marked the beginning of a state visit that was intended to strengthen the special relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom. The year 1959 was significant for both countries, as the United States was in the midst of the Cold War and the UK was preparing to join the European Economic Community.
