EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the moment during a séance in 1931 when renowned medium Helen Duncan (1897-1956) is believed to have emitted ectoplasm during a sitting with investigator Harry Price. The image, taken at Price's laboratory in London, shows Duncan in a trance-like state, with her hands extended and a white, gelatinous substance appearing to materialize between them. Ectoplasm, a substance long associated with spiritualism and mediumship, was a subject of intense interest and controversy in the paranormal community of the time. Price, a leading skeptic and investigator of spiritualist phenomena, had invited Duncan to his laboratory under the pretense of a genuine interest in her abilities. However, his true intention was to expose her as a fraud. The photograph, along with other evidence gathered during the séance, was used as part of the case against Duncan when she was eventually charged with fraud in 1934. She was the first person in the UK to be prosecuted under the Witchcraft Act of 1735 for producing "an article to be used to deceive" during a séance. Despite the controversy surrounding her, Duncan's séances continued to attract large crowds and she remained a popular figure in the paranormal world until her death in 1956. This photograph, a testament to the intrigue and fascination surrounding mediumship and the paranormal during this period, remains a significant piece of historical evidence in the study of spiritualism and its place in modern history.
