1769 1852 Iron Wellington Leveque

EDITORS COMMENTS
"This evocative portrait captures the indomitable spirit and unyielding determination of Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852), one of the most celebrated figures in British history. Known as the 'Iron Duke,' Wellington's military prowess and political acumen earned him enduring fame, particularly for his pivotal role in the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Born into an Irish aristocratic family, Wellington's military career began in India, where he gained valuable experience and rose through the ranks. He later served in the Peninsular War against France, leading the British and Portuguese forces to a series of victories. The decisive Battle of Waterloo, fought in present-day Belgium, brought an end to Napoleon's reign and secured Wellington's place in history. Following his military success, Wellington entered politics, serving as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1828 to 1830. His tenure was marked by his opposition to Catholic emancipation and his support for the Corn Laws, which protected British agriculture. Wellington's political career was not without controversy, and he faced numerous challenges from both the Whigs and the Tories. This photograph, taken in 1852, captures the Duke in later life, his stern expression and piercing gaze reflecting the unwavering resolve that defined his military and political careers. The image serves as a testament to Wellington's indomitable spirit and enduring legacy as a British icon." Mary Evans Picture Library / Mary Evans Prints Online. Reproduction Number: MEV011324.
