This striking portrait captures the sixth Duke of Devonshire, William George Cavendish (1808-1891), in his prime during the year 1843. The Duke, known as "William Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire" in historical records, was a prominent figure in British society and politics during the Victorian era. Born into the esteemed Cavendish family, the Duke inherited the title and vast estates at the tender age of 12 upon the death of his father. He was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge, before embarking on a distinguished military career. In 1832, he was appointed as a Colonel in the Derby Militia and later became a Lieutenant-General in 1854. The Duke's political career was equally impressive. He served as the Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire from 1837 to 1891, representing the interests of the county and its people. In 1859, he was appointed as the Master-General of the Ordnance, a position he held until 1866. This portrait, taken in 1843, showcases the Duke's regal bearing and refined elegance. He is depicted wearing the insignia of the Order of the Garter, a testament to his high rank and status in British society.
