In this striking historical portrait, the Duke of Alençon, François de Valois (1556-1584), is depicted in full armor, exuding an air of regal confidence and military prowess. Born as the eldest son of King Henri II of France and Catherine de' Medici, François was destined for greatness from an early age. The Duke of Alençon was a prominent figure during the latter half of the 16th century, an era marked by religious and political turmoil in Europe. In 1572, he played a significant role in the Saint Bartholomew's Day Massacre, an event that saw the systematic elimination of Huguenot (Protestant) leaders in France. However, his allegiance to the Catholic faith did not prevent him from supporting the Huguenot cause in later years, reflecting the complex political landscape of the time. François de Valois' military career was equally impressive. He served in various campaigns against the Spanish, Dutch, and English, demonstrating his exceptional leadership skills and battlefield acumen. In 1581, he was appointed as the Lieutenant General of the French army, a position he held until his untimely death in 1584.
