EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the determination and courage of General Jean-Baptiste Dufour as he leads the defense of Mainz during the Napoleonic Wars in 1799. The historic image portrays Dufour, a French military commander, standing tall and resolute on the city walls of Mainz, a strategic German town located along the Rhine River. With his sword in hand and his hat tipped against the wind and rain, Dufour inspires his troops to hold their ground against the advancing Austrian and Russian forces. The Battle of Mainz, also known as the Second Battle of Mainz, took place on August 5, 1799, during the War of the Second Coalition. The French army, under the command of General Championnet, had been forced to retreat from Mannheim and had taken refuge in Mainz. Dufour, who was in charge of the city's defense, led a valiant resistance against the combined Austrian and Russian forces, buying time for the French army to regroup and withdraw. Despite the odds being stacked against them, the French soldiers fought bravely, and their resistance delayed the enemy advance long enough for the French army to escape. The battle resulted in heavy casualties on both sides, but the French were ultimately able to withdraw in good order. This print is a testament to the heroism and tenacity of General Dufour and the French troops during the Battle of Mainz. The historic event remains an important chapter in the annals of military history, and this image offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of war and conflict in Europe.
