1652 1692 1722 Bavaria Baviere Charlotte Duchesse Elisabeth Orleans

EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite portrait captures Charlotte-Elisabeth of Bavaria, also known as Duchesse d'Orleans, in the prime of her youth in 1692. Born on December 27, 1652, in Munich, Bavaria, Charlotte-Elisabeth was the eldest daughter of Ferdinand Maria, Elector of Bavaria, and Henriette Adelaide of Savoy. At the age of 15, she was married to Philippe I, Duke of Orléans, the younger brother of King Louis XIV of France. The marriage was arranged to strengthen the alliance between France and Bavaria. Duchesse d'Orléans was renowned for her beauty, intelligence, and wit. She was a patron of the arts and sciences, and her salon in Paris was a gathering place for intellectuals, writers, and artists. Her most famous guest was Voltaire, who dedicated his poem "La Pucelle d'Orléans" to her. Despite her close relationship with Voltaire, Duchesse d'Orléans remained a devout Catholic and a loyal wife to Philippe I, who was known for his womanizing and extravagance. She bore him seven children, four of whom survived to adulthood. This portrait, which dates from 1692, shows Duchesse d'Orléans in a simple yet elegant dress, with a delicate lace collar and a pearl necklace. Her expressive eyes and gentle smile convey a sense of intelligence and warmth. The artist, unknown to us, has captured the essence of a woman who was admired for her beauty, intelligence, and grace, and who played an important role in the political and cultural history of Europe. Duchesse d'Orléans continued to be an influential figure in French court life until her death on February 3, 1722. She is buried in the Royal Basilica of Saint-Denis, near Paris, where she rests alongside her husband and their children.
