EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant black and white portrait, the Duchess of Beaufort, Victoria Constance Mary Somerset, radiates sophistication and grace. Born on June 12, 1897, she was the daughter of Adolphus, 1st Marquess of Cambridge, a brother of Queen Mary, and Lady Margaret Evelyn Grosvenor. The Duchess's royal lineage is further emphasized by her birth name, Princess Mary of Teck. On June 14, 1923, she married the Marquess of Worcester, later the 10th Duke of Beaufort, in a grand ceremony held in London. With her marriage, she became the Marchioness of Worcester, and later, upon the death of the Duke's father in 1924, she assumed the title of Duchess of Beaufort. The Duchess's refined appearance and poised demeanor are evident in this portrait, taken around 1925. Her intricately beaded gown and elaborate hairstyle are reminiscent of the opulence and grandeur of the aristocratic society of the time. The Duchess's piercing gaze and confident posture convey a sense of strength and intelligence, making this portrait a captivating glimpse into the life of a member of the British royalty and aristocracy. The Duchess of Beaufort's lineage and title are a testament to her esteemed place in society during this period, and this portrait serves as a beautiful reminder of the elegance and sophistication of the aristocratic world in the early 20th century.
