EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures the intense gaze and unyielding determination of Louis Joseph, Duc de Vendôme (1654-1712), a renowned French military commander of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Born into the esteemed House of Bourbon, Vendôme's military career began at a young age under the tutelage of his father, Louis II, Duke of Vendôme. During the War of the League of Augsburg (1688-1697), Vendôme distinguished himself as a brilliant tactician, leading the French forces to several significant victories against the coalition of European powers. His most notable success came in 1690 at the Battle of Fleurus, where he decisively defeated the allied forces under the command of the Duke of Marlborough and Prince Eugene of Savoy. In the following years, Vendôme continued to serve his country with distinction, participating in the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714) and the War of the Quadruple Alliance (1711-1714). However, his military prowess was not without controversy. In 1712, during the Siege of Strasbourg, Vendôme was captured by the Austrian forces under the command of Prince Eugene. The circumstances of his capture remain a subject of debate, with some historians suggesting that he may have intentionally surrendered in order to save the lives of his troops. This portrait, attributed to the artist Delaistre, captures the essence of a man who dedicated his life to the service of his country and the pursuit of military victory. With his piercing gaze and resolute expression, Vendôme embodies the spirit of the French military commanders of his time, a testament to the enduring legacy of French military history.
