EDITORS COMMENTS
This series of four vintage photographs depicts the classic discus throwing event at the 1908 Olympics in London, held at Shepherd's Bush. The ancient Greek sport, which made its modern Olympic debut in this edition, required athletes to hurl a heavy discus as far as possible. Each image in this sequence captures a distinct moment in the throwing process. In the first photograph, the athlete assumes a balanced and powerful stance, with feet shoulder-width apart and knees slightly bent. The discus is held in both hands, with the arms extended outward. The second photograph captures the moment of release, as the athlete swings the discus back and around, generating maximum momentum. The third photograph shows the athlete following through, with the arms extended and the body twisted to face the direction of the throw. In the final image, the discus is seen soaring through the air, leaving a trail of dust in its wake as it lands several meters away from the athlete. These timeless images offer a fascinating glimpse into the rich history of the Olympics and the enduring appeal of discus throwing as a classic sport. The photographs were taken during the 1908 Games, which marked the first time that the ancient Greek sport was included in the modern Olympic Games. The series is an important historical record of this iconic event and a testament to the athletic prowess of the competitors who participated in it.
