Clock Dickory Dock Fear Fright Frightened Grandfather Hassall Mice Running Stool Struck Vermin

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this 20th century photograph by Mary Evans Picture Library, taken from the Peter & Dawn Cope Collection, a young girl stands frozen in fear as the clock's pendulum swings ominously above her. The classic nursery rhyme "Dickory, Dickory, Dock" comes to mind as we gaze upon the scene, with its playful verses of a mouse running up the clock and the clock striking one, causing the mouse to scamper away in fear. However, in this moment, the rhyme takes on a more ominous tone as the girl's expression conveys a genuine sense of terror. The stool she stands on seems to wobble beneath her, adding to the sense of instability and uncertainty. The clock, once a symbol of timekeeping and order, now looms large and menacing, its gears and pendulum a reminder of the inexorable passage of time. The girl's frightened gaze is fixed on the clock, her small hands clutching the edge of the stool for dear life. The shadows cast by the grandfather clock create a sense of depth and dimension, drawing the viewer further into the scene. This photograph, with its timeless imagery and evocative storytelling, is a reminder of the power of the written word and the visual arts to transport us to another place and time.
