EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the majestic and imposing presence of the German battleship DEUTSCHLAND as it sails the high seas during World War Two. Built between 1922 and 1924, the DEUTSCHLAND was the flagship of the German High Seas Fleet and the largest warship in the world at the time of its launch. With a displacement of over 28,000 tons and a length of 187 meters, it was a formidable symbol of German military power and a testament to the advanced engineering capabilities of the interwar period. The DEUTSCHLAND was commissioned into the German Navy in 1924 and saw action during the early stages of World War Two. In August 1939, just prior to the outbreak of war, it took part in a fleet review in Kiel harbor, which was attended by Adolf Hitler and other high-ranking Nazi officials. This photograph was likely taken during that event, as evidenced by the large swastika flag flying from the mast. The battleship's impressive steam-powered propulsion system, capable of reaching speeds of up to 21 knots, is visible in this image, with plumes of smoke billowing from its funnels. The DEUTSCHLAND was also heavily armed, carrying a main battery of twelve 28 cm (11 inch) guns and a secondary battery of twelve 15 cm (5.9 inch) guns. Despite its formidable firepower, the battleship was ultimately sunk by British aircraft in the Danish straits in 1945, marking the end of an era in naval warfare. This photograph is a poignant reminder of a bygone era in world history, when steam-powered battleships ruled the waves and the specter of war loomed large over the global landscape. It is a testament to the enduring allure of maritime history and the indelible mark left by the DEUTSCHLAND on the annals of naval warfare.
