EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back in time to the Victorian era, showcasing the majestic Flaminio Obelisk in Rome, Italy. Standing tall at 67 feet high, with a total height of 100 feet including its base and cross, this ancient obelisk is truly a sight to behold. Originally built during the reign of Pharaohs Ramesses II and Merneptah in the 13th century BC, it resided in the Temple of Sun in Heliopolis before being brought to Rome by command of Augustus in 10 BC. Alongside the Obelisk of Montecitorio, it adorned the Spina of the Circus Maximus for three centuries before being discovered broken into three pieces along with another obelisk. Thanks to Domenico Fontana's skillful hands and Pope Sixtus V's command, this magnificent obelisk found its new home in Piazza del Popolo where it was erected once again in 1589. In 1823, Giuseppe Valadier added his artistic touch by embellishing it with an Egyptian-style base featuring four circular basins and stone lions. The magic lantern slide captures every intricate detail of this historical masterpiece while transporting us back to a time when ancient wonders fascinated society. John Short's expert photography allows us to appreciate not only the grandeur but also the rich history behind one of Rome's thirteen ancient obelisks.
