Ford railcar set on the curve at Selsey Station with livestock, goods and empty milk churns being unloaded from the centre wagon. The Selsey Tramway opened in 1897 and formed part of Col. Stephens Railway Empire. The line ran from Chichester down the peninsula to Selsey. Increasing road competition eroded the Companys profits and the line was closed in January 1935

EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time to the bustling Selsey Station in 1933, as captured in this remarkable print from the Ronald Shephard Collection. The Ford railcar, a symbol of modernity and efficiency during its era, gracefully curves along the track while unloading a variety of goods that were essential for daily life on the peninsula. Livestock is carefully guided out of one wagon, their presence adding an air of vitality to the scene. Meanwhile, workers diligently unload crates filled with various products and empty milk churns from another wagon. This snapshot perfectly encapsulates a moment when transportation by rail was still at its peak. The Selsey Tramway itself holds great historical significance as part of Col. Stephens Railway Empire. Opening its doors to passengers in 1897, it served as a vital link between Chichester and Selsey until January 1935 when mounting competition from road transport forced its closure. This image serves as a testament to an era long gone but not forgotten - where railways reigned supreme and played an integral role in connecting communities across West Sussex. Thanks to the West Sussex Record Office's preservation efforts, we are able to glimpse into this vibrant past through photographs like these.
