The Prince Imperial's Fatal Desire for Military Glory: The Arrival of His Body at Itelezi The Prince Imperial of France, Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, was a young man of only 21 years old when he attended the Royal Military Academy in 1877. Despite being the nephew of Napoleon III and the grandnephew of Napoleon Bonaparte, the legendary Emperor of France, the Prince Imperial was known for his impetuous and impulsive nature. He had an insatiable desire for military glory, which led him to defy his orders during the Zulu War in 1879. The Zulu War was a conflict between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom, which had erupted due to the expansionist policies of the British. The Prince Imperial had been given orders to observe the fighting from a safe distance, but his desire for military glory proved too strong. He insisted on joining the fight, despite the risks involved. On May 1, 1879, the Prince Imperial was leading a group of British soldiers when they were ambushed by the Zulu army. The young Prince was fatally wounded during the battle, and his body was later discovered near the village of Itelezi. The news of his death reached the British forces on May 7, and his body was brought back to Itelezi for a proper burial. The arrival of the Prince Imperial's body at Itelezi was a somber and solemn occasion. The British soldiers paid their respects to their fallen comrade and prince, and a makeshift grave was prepared for him. The event was captured in this historic photograph, which shows the solemn procession of the Prince Imperial's body being carried on a stretcher, surrounded by British soldiers.
