EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts the poignant moment of the legendary hero Herakles, or Hercules, as he succumbs to the fatal consequences of his wife Deianira's misguided attempt to win back his affections. In the mythological tale, Deianira, feeling neglected and betrayed, sought the advice of the centaur Nessus, who had once carried her across a river. Nessus told her that the blood of the centaur Hydra, which Herakles had slain, could be used to keep her husband faithful. Deianira obtained the blood and applied it to Herakles' tunic, unaware that it was not the Hydra's blood but that of the venomous centaur Nessus himself. Upon putting on the tunic, Herakles was slowly poisoned by the toxic substance, which caused him immense pain and suffering. In this print, we see Herakles lying on a bed, surrounded by his loyal friends and family, as he takes his final breath. The expression of sorrow and despair on their faces conveys the tragic nature of the scene. Herakles, the strong and invincible hero, reduced to a mere mortal, succumbing to the very person who was supposed to love him the most. This powerful image serves as a reminder of the consequences of jealousy, betrayal, and the complexities of human relationships. The intricate details of the print, from the folds of Herakles' cloak to the anguished expressions of those around him, transport us back to the classical world and the rich history of mythology.
