1667 Anglo Burns Commanded Medway Rochester Sails Shipping

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the chaos and destruction wrought by the Dutch fleet under the command of Vice Admiral Michiel de Ruyter during the Second Anglo-Dutch War in 1667. The scene unfolds at Rochester in the Medway, where de Ruyter's forces successfully attacked and burned a significant portion of the English naval fleet moored there. The Dutch fleet, seen here sailing up the Thames, had managed to slip past the English defenses undetected, catching the English ships off guard. De Ruyter's daring raid on the Medway was a major turning point in the war, which had been raging since May 1665. The English, under the leadership of King Charles II, had initially held the upper hand, but the Dutch victory at the Battle of Lowestoft in June 1665 had shifted the tide. The English fleet, demoralized and weakened, was no match for the well-prepared Dutch forces. The burning of the English ships at Rochester was a devastating blow to the English naval power. The loss of over thirty ships, including several flagships, crippled the English navy and forced the government to seek a peace treaty with the Dutch. The Treaty of Breda, signed in August 1667, ended the war on favorable terms for the Dutch. This historical print, from the esteemed Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a vivid reminder of the pivotal role played by de Ruyter and the Dutch fleet in shaping the course of Anglo-Dutch relations during the late 17th century. The image transports us back to a time of war, intrigue, and naval power, when the fate of nations could be decided on the waters of the Thames and the Medway.
