1667 Anglo Burns Commanded Medway Rochester Sails Shipping

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the pivotal moment in the Second Anglo-Dutch War (1665-1667) when the Dutch fleet, under the command of Vice-Admiral De Ruyter (1628-1676), sailed up the River Thames and wreaked havoc on English shipping at Rochester in Medway on June 11, 1667. The event, known as the Raid on the Medway, was a significant military victory for the Dutch and a humiliating blow to the English. De Ruyter's fleet of around 35 ships, having successfully engaged the English navy in the North Sea, sailed into the Thames Estuary under the cover of darkness. The Dutch sailors set fire to several English warships and merchant vessels, including the flagship HMS Royal Charles, which was later raised and repaired but never saw active service again. The raid caused widespread panic and damage, with the English losing around 20 ships and significant military and economic resources. This print, produced shortly after the event, provides a vivid and dramatic depiction of the scene. The Dutch fleet is shown sailing triumphantly up the Thames, with the burning English ships and buildings in the background. The smoke and flames add to the sense of chaos and destruction, while the Dutch flag flies proudly from the lead ship. The print also includes a detailed view of the Medway estuary and the surrounding countryside, with the town of Rochester visible in the distance. The Raid on the Medway marked the end of the Second Anglo-Dutch War and had far-reaching consequences for both nations. It demonstrated the Dutch naval superiority and strengthened their position as a major European power, while also prompting significant military and naval reforms in England. This print is an important historical record of a pivotal moment in the Anglo-Dutch relationship and the wider European power struggle of the late 17th century.
