"This evocative image captures the moment as David Rizzio, the Italian musician and favorite of Mary, Queen of Scots, strums the lute in the opulent surroundings of the Scottish royal court. Born in around 1543 in Montemagno, Italy, Rizzio rose to prominence in Scotland after being brought to the court in 1564 by the Queen's Italian secretary, Michele Settesoli. Over the next few years, Rizzio became an integral part of Mary's inner circle, serving as her music teacher, confidant, and advisor. He arranged her marriage to the Earl of Bothwell in 1565, and later played a key role in the negotiations for her marriage to the Earl of Darnley in 1565. The year 1566 brought tragic consequences for Rizzio, however, when he was brutally murdered in the presence of the Queen during a violent attack at Holyrood Palace. The assassination, orchestrated by Darnley and the Earl of Bothwell, marked a turning point in Mary's reign and led to her eventual imprisonment. Despite the dark end to his story, Rizzio's time at the Scottish court was marked by music, beauty, and intrigue.
