He served as a Member of Parliament for various Scottish constituencies and held several high-ranking positions in the British government, including Lord Advocate of Scotland and Secretary of State for Scotland. Erskine's political career was marked by his strong commitment to the Scottish Enlightenment and his advocacy for Scottish interests within the British Parliament. He was a vocal opponent of the English attempts to impose English laws and institutions on Scotland and worked tirelessly to preserve Scottish traditions and autonomy. Despite his political accomplishments, Erskine's personal life was marred by tragedy. He was married twice, first to Lady Jean Campbell, with whom he had five children, and later to Lady Anne Campbell, with whom he had no children.
