This photograph captures the enigmatic and brilliant figure of Daniel Francois Esprit Auber (1782-1871), a renowned French composer of the Romantic era. Born in Paris on February 28, 1782, Auber studied at the Paris Conservatoire under the tutelage of Luigi Cherubini and Rodolphe Kreutzer. He made his professional debut in 1804 with the opera "Le lac des fées," and went on to compose more than 60 operas, many of which remain popular to this day. Auber's most famous work, "Fra Diavolo, or The Devil in Disguise," premiered in 1833 and was an instant success, running for over 100 performances in its first season. The opera's infectious tunes, including the famous "Gondoliers' Song," continue to be performed and beloved around the world. Auber's other notable works include "La muette de Portici," "Manon Lescaut," and "Masaniello." This photograph, taken in 1871, captures Auber in the later years of his life. He is seen here in a formal portrait, dressed in a tailcoat and cravat, with a serious yet thoughtful expression on his face. The image is a testament to Auber's enduring legacy as a composer who bridged the gap between the Classical and Romantic eras in French music. His influence can be heard in the works of later composers such as Verdi, Wagner, and Offenbach. Auber's operas continue to be performed and cherished, and his music remains a vital part of the French musical heritage.
