In this image from Indian mythology, Damayanti, the beautiful and virtuous princess of Vidarbha, stands before two figures in deep contemplation. The scene depicts a pivotal moment in the ancient Sanskrit epic, the Mahabharata, where Damayanti is tasked with choosing her future husband from among two suitors. The first suitor, disguised as a prince, is in fact the god Indra, the king of the gods. The second suitor, Nala, is the true prince of Hastinapur, who has been sent by Bhima, Damayanti's father, as a potential husband. However, Nala is unaware of his true identity at this point in the story. Despite the presence of the divine Indra, Damayanti remains steadfast in her determination to choose the right man based on merit and character, rather than appearances.
