EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a pivotal moment in the history of the Czech people as they engage in fierce skirmishes against the Bolsheviks on the outskirts of Ekaterinburg in 1918. The First World War had come to an end, but the chaos and turmoil of the Russian Revolution continued to wreak havoc across Eastern Europe. The Czech soldiers, dressed in their distinctive uniforms, are shown advancing through the snow, weapons at the ready, as they face off against their Bolshevik adversaries. The harsh winter conditions of Siberia, where the battle took place, are evident in the frozen landscape and the heavy coats worn by the troops. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by the Czech people during this tumultuous period in history. The Czech Legion, as they came to be known, had been formed in May 1918 with the aim of helping to establish an independent Czechoslovakia. They faced numerous challenges, including harsh weather, limited resources, and a formidable enemy in the Bolsheviks. Despite these obstacles, they managed to make significant gains, eventually reaching Vladivostok in the Far East of Russia and ultimately contributing to the establishment of an independent Czechoslovakia in 1918.
