EDITORS COMMENTS
CWF Alan Wright, better known as Vernon Stokes, is depicted in this photograph taken around 1907. Stokes was a renowned British actor, known for his versatile performances on the stage and in early films. Born on March 22, 1874, in London, England, Stokes began his acting career in the late 1890s, appearing in various repertory companies and touring productions. By the early 1900s, Stokes had made a name for himself in London's West End theaters, where he played a range of roles, from Shakespearean tragedies to contemporary dramas. His talent and charisma soon caught the attention of filmmakers, and he began appearing in silent films in the late 1910s. In this photograph, Stokes is seen wearing a smart, high-collared shirt, a bow tie, and a dapper hat, exuding an air of sophistication and confidence. The image captures him in mid-pose, with one hand resting on his hip and the other holding a cane, as if ready to deliver a line or make an entrance. Despite his success, Stokes' personal life was marked by tragedy. In 1915, his wife, actress Maud Hill, died by suicide, leaving him to raise their two young children alone. Stokes continued to act throughout the 1920s and 1930s, but his later years were marred by financial difficulties and ill health. He died on December 23, 1948, at the age of 74. This photograph is a poignant reminder of a bygone era in the history of British theater and film, and a testament to the enduring talent and charisma of Vernon Stokes.
