EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning vintage poster showcases the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company's Cunard Line and its two magnificent ocean liners, the Lusitania and Mauretania. Dated to the early 20th century, this poster proudly proclaims these ships as the 'finest, fastest, and largest steamers in the world.' The Lusitania, depicted on the left, was the first of the two to enter service in 1907, while the Mauretania followed in 1909. Both ships were renowned for their size, speed, and luxurious amenities, making them the epitome of transatlantic travel during that era. The Lusitania, with its distinctive black hull and funnel, was the first Cunard liner to break the record for the fastest transatlantic crossing. The Mauretania, in turn, surpassed the Lusitania's record and held the Blue Riband for the fastest transatlantic crossing for over 20 years. Unfortunately, history remembers the Lusitania for a tragic event that took place on May 7, 1915, when it was sunk by a German U-boat during World War I. The sinking resulted in a significant loss of life, including many American civilians, leading to a turning point in the war and international relations. This poster is a captivating reminder of a bygone era in maritime history, showcasing the grandeur and sophistication of ocean travel during the early 20th century. The intricate details of the ships, the vibrant colors, and the dynamic composition all contribute to its timeless appeal.
