EDITORS COMMENTS
This aerial shot captures the iconic Crystal Palace Athletics Stadium, nestled within the picturesque Crystal Palace Park in London. Steeped in history and sporting excellence, this national sports centre has been a cornerstone of UK athletics since its opening in 1964. With a capacity of 15,500 spectators, which can be expanded to accommodate up to 24,000 with temporary seating, this stadium has witnessed countless moments of triumph and athletic prowess. From record-breaking sprints on the track to breathtaking long jumps and high jumps that defy gravity, this hallowed ground has seen it all. However, as time marched forward and new horizons beckoned for British athletics, the stadium was eventually surpassed by the grandeur of the 2012 Olympic Stadium. Nevertheless, its legacy remains intact as a testament to an illustrious past. Beyond its role as an athletics hub, Crystal Palace Park itself boasts a rich sporting heritage dating back to the 1860s. Once hosting top-class football matches, rugby battles on muddy fields and thrilling cricket encounters under sunny skies; even grand prix motor racing roared through these grounds until early into the twentieth century. Through Damian Grady's lens capturing this stunning bird's-eye view from above - devoid of any commercial connotations - we are reminded not only of architectural marvel but also how sport unites us all across generations.
