EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the momentous crossing of the Bosphorus by the Crusaders in 1097, an event that marked a pivotal turning point in the First Crusade. The Crusaders, a diverse army of European knights and foot soldiers, had set out from Europe in response to a plea for help from the Byzantine Emperor Alexios I Komnenos, who was besieged by the Seljuk Turks in Constantinople. After a grueling journey through Asia Minor, the Crusaders reached the Bosphorus, the strategic waterway that separates Europe from Asia. In this print from Mary Evans Picture Library, we see the Crusaders' fleet of ships making their way across the Bosphorus, their sails filled with the wind, as they approach the city of Chrysopolis on the Asian side. The Crusaders, depicted in armor and carrying their crosses, are shown wading through the water or clambering aboard small boats to make the final leg of their journey to the European shore. The city of Constantinople, with its impressive walls and towers, can be seen in the background, a symbol of the great Christian civilization that the Crusaders were fighting to protect and defend. The successful crossing of the Bosphorus allowed the Crusaders to join forces with the Byzantine army and launch a successful assault on the Seljuk Turks, leading to the capture of Nicaea and the eventual recapture of Jerusalem in 1099. This historic event marked the beginning of the Crusader States in the Middle East, which lasted for over two centuries, and had a profound impact on European history and identity.
