Born on February 27, 1882, Wilhelm was the eldest son of Kaiser Friedrich III and Victoria, Princess Royal, the eldest daughter of Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom. As the heir to the Prussian and German thrones, he was educated in the military tradition and rose through the ranks, eventually becoming commander of the 5th Army in August 1914. Despite his belief that the war was a tragic mistake, Wilhelm remained in his position until November 1916. He was eventually succeeded by General Erich Ludendorff, who oversaw Germany's final military offensives before the eventual defeat in 1918.
