EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, taken around 1875, we see Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm of Germany, later known as Friedrich III, exuding regal charm and charisma. At this point in time, he was still the heir apparent to the German throne, having married Princess Victoria of the United Kingdom, daughter of Queen Victoria, in 1858. Friedrich Wilhelm's impressive beard and dapper attire, including a fashionable blazer, add to his distinguished and commanding appearance. The future king's facial hair was a hallmark of his later reign, as he was one of the first German monarchs to sport a beard, setting a trend among the German nobility. Tragically, Friedrich Wilhelm's reign was brief, lasting only three months from March to June 1888. He ascended to the throne following the death of his father, Kaiser Wilhelm I, but succumbed to cancer shortly thereafter. His sudden demise left the German people in shock, as he had been a beloved figure during his brief time as crown prince. This photograph offers a glimpse into the life of a man who, despite his short reign, left an indelible mark on German history. The image captures the essence of a royal figure, poised and confident, as he prepared to assume the mantle of leadership in Prussia and the German Empire.
