EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant postcard image, titled "Crocodile Tears," captures the unexpected and anthropomorphic side of war as depicted by amateur artist George Ranstead during World War I. Dating back to circa 1916, Ranstead's drawing shows a crocodile shedding tears from its eyes due to a toothache. The crocodile's expression of pain and sorrow is striking, evoking a sense of empathy and connection with the viewer. Ranstead, who served in the Army Pay Corps, was one of many soldiers who turned to drawing as a pastime during their time in the military. His artwork reflects the diverse range of experiences and influences of the period, from wartime humor to images of beautiful women. The style of this drawing is reminiscent of the illustrated magazines that were popular during this time, showcasing the artistic talent and creativity that emerged from the trenches of the Great War. The image of a crocodile weeping tears of pain may seem an unlikely subject for a war-time postcard, but it speaks to the universal language of suffering and the human capacity for compassion. This unique and intriguing postcard serves as a reminder of the complex emotions and experiences that defined the era of World War I.
