EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the essence of cricket legend, John Shuter, in his prime. Born on March 26, 1855, in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, Shuter was a first-class cricketer who represented both Surrey and Kent counties during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The image, taken around 1920, shows Shuter in a thoughtful pose, his intense focus and determination evident in his piercing gaze. Cricket was a popular sport in England during the Victorian era, and Shuter was a key figure in its rich history. He made his first-class debut for Surrey in 1876 and went on to play for the county until 1893. In 1885, he joined Kent, where he remained until his retirement from first-class cricket in 1901. Shuter was a versatile player, capable of opening the batting and bowling both right-arm fast and slow. His best season with the bat came in 1888, when he scored 1,123 runs at an average of 27.10. With the ball, his best figures were 6 for 42 against Yorkshire in 1881. Despite his impressive cricketing career, Shuter is perhaps best remembered for his role in the famous "Miracle of Taranaki" during the New Zealand tour of 1885-86. Facing a formidable New Zealand team, Surrey were struggling to make a score when Shuter, batting at number eleven, came to the crease. With the score at 122 for 9, Shuter and the twelfth man, Billy Bates, put on an unbeaten partnership of 110 runs to save the game. This heroic stand is still celebrated in cricket folklore and solidified Shuter's place in the annals of the sport's history. This photograph is a testament to the enduring legacy of John Shuter, a true cricket great who defied the odds and left an indelible mark on the game.
