EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the intense focus and determination of Australian cricketer, Thomas William (T.W.) Garrett, as he prepares to bowl during a match in 1943. Born on March 2, 1858, in the small town of Benalla, Victoria, Garrett is considered one of the greatest cricketers in Australian history. Known for his exceptional accuracy and ability to swing the ball both ways, Garrett made his first-class debut for Victoria in 1880 and went on to play for Australia in 12 Tests between 1882 and 1887. The image shows Garrett in his prime, with his strong, muscular build and intense gaze fixed on his target. He wears the traditional white flannel cricket kit, complete with a high-collared shirt, long trousers, and a straw boater hat. The background is filled with the lush greenery of the cricket field, and the atmosphere is electric with the anticipation of the game. Garrett's career was marked by numerous achievements, including taking 10 wickets in a single innings, a feat that was an impressive accomplishment in the era before specialized bowling roles. He also holds the record for the most wickets taken in a single season for Victoria, with 118 wickets in the 1883-84 season. Despite his success on the cricket field, Garrett's life was not without tragedy. In 1885, his wife, Ethel, died by suicide, leaving him to raise their three young children alone. Garrett continued to play cricket, but the loss deeply affected him, and he retired from the game in 1893. This photograph is a testament to Garrett's enduring legacy as a cricketing legend and a reminder of the passion and dedication required to excel in this historic and beloved sport.
