EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts Louise de Savoie (1476-1531), the remarkable woman who played a pivotal role in the history of France during the early 16th century. Daughter of Philippe II, duc de Savoie, Louise was the wife of Charles de Valois-Orléans, comte d'Angoulême, and the mother of the future King Francis I of France. Louise is seen here in a sumptuous costume typical of the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Her elegant gown, adorned with intricate gold and pearl embroidery, is fashioned from rich velvet fabric, a sign of her noble status. A fur-lined mantle, draped elegantly over her shoulders, adds an extra layer of warmth and luxury. Her headdress, adorned with pearls and precious stones, completes the regal ensemble. Louise's life was marked by tragedy and triumph. After the death of her husband in 1498, she became the regent for her young son, Francis, during his frequent absences from France. During her regency, she skillfully navigated the complex political landscape of the time, maintaining alliances and securing the succession for her son. Her strong leadership and diplomatic prowess were crucial in maintaining peace and stability during a period of instability. This photograph, from the Mary Evans Picture Library, offers a glimpse into the opulent world of the French court during the Renaissance period. It serves as a reminder of the important role that women, such as Louise de Savoie, played in shaping the course of history.
