EDITORS COMMENTS
This intriguing image is a portrait of Thomas Coryate (c. 1577-1617), an English traveler and author, whose adventurous spirit and vivid writing brought the exotic lands of Europe to life for his contemporaries. Coryate is best known for his book "Coryat's Crudities: Having the Most Rare, Wittie, and Ingeneous Surprises in his Late Travel into Divers Parts of Europe," published in 1611. Born in Devizes, Wiltshire, Coryate embarked on his travels in 1597, visiting Italy, Germany, Hungary, Poland, and other European countries. His account of his journey, filled with colorful anecdotes, cultural observations, and humorous incidents, was an instant success and went through several editions. The man depicted in this portrait exudes a sense of curiosity and intelligence. He is shown wearing a fashionable doublet and a ruff, the collar fashionable during the late Elizabethan and early Jacobean eras. The background is simple, with a plain wall and a window, drawing the focus to Coryate's expressive face and piercing gaze. Coryate's travels and writings were influential in the development of English travel literature and helped to popularize the Grand Tour, a journey through Europe to broaden one's education and cultural experience. His adventurous spirit and vivid storytelling continue to inspire travelers and armchair adventurers alike. This portrait is a testament to Coryate's legacy as a traveler, author, and cultural explorer. It invites us to explore the world through his eyes and to appreciate the richness and diversity of European culture during the early modern period.
