Corporal Thomas Edward Rendle, VC. Probably 1915

Thomas Rendle (born Bedminster, Bristol on the 14th December 1884) with a dog, wearing his Victoria Cross medal. At the time of his award he was a bandsman in the 1st Battalion, Duke of Cornwalls Light Infantry and was acting as a stretcher bearer. He was 29 years old. His citation reads " For his conspicuous bravery on 20 November 1914 near Wulvergem, when he attended to the wounded under very heavy shell fire and rifle fire, and rescued men from the trenches in which they had been buried by the blowing in of the parapets by the fire of the enemys heavy howitzers". He was the only stretcher bearer to receive a Victoria Cross in World War 1. His medal is held at the DCLI Museum in Bodmin. He was awarded the medal by King George V on 12 July 1915. He died in 1946 in Cape Town South Africa. (During the war a soldier called Thomas Randle impersonated Rendle and attended talks and meetings etc. until he was eventually caught!) Photographer: Arthur William Jordan

Corporal Thomas Edward Rendle, VC - A Hero's Unwavering Courage

EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this poignant print captured around 1915, we see Corporal Thomas Edward Rendle proudly posing with his loyal canine companion. Wearing his distinguished Victoria Cross medal, the epitome of bravery and sacrifice shines through his eyes. Born in Bedminster, Bristol on December 14th, 1884, Rendle served as a bandsman in the esteemed 1st Battalion, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry during World War I. Acting as a stretcher bearer at the age of 29 when he received this prestigious honor for conspicuous bravery near Wulvergem on November 20th, 1914. Under relentless shell fire and rifle shots from the enemy's heavy howitzers that threatened to engulf him and those wounded soldiers under his care, Rendle fearlessly attended to their needs. He valiantly rescued men buried alive by collapsing trenches caused by enemy bombardment. Remarkably, he stands alone among all stretcher bearers in World War I to be awarded the Victoria Cross for his selflessness and heroism. Today, this cherished medal is safeguarded at the DCLI Museum in Bodmin as a testament to his extraordinary valor. Tragically passing away in Cape Town South Africa in 1946 after living a life dedicated to service and courage. It is worth noting that during the war another soldier named Thomas Randle impersonated our revered hero until justice was finally served. Photographed by Arthur William Jordan with utmost respect and admiration for Corporal Thomas Edward Rendle's unwavering commitment to duty and humanity; this image serves as an everlasting tribute to one man's indomitable spirit amidst unimaginable adversity.
