EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative painting by Malcolm Greensmith, we see a corporal of the 3rd Dragoon Guards, also known as the Prince of Wales's Dragoon Guards, dressed in his stable outfit. The corporal, who is depicted as a farrier, wears the ribbons of the Egypt Medal and the Khedive Star, both earned during the British military campaign in Egypt between 1882 and 1889. The Egypt Medal was awarded to British and Indian military personnel who took part in the Anglo-Egyptian War, which ended the rule of the Khedive of Egypt, Ismail Pasha, and led to the establishment of a British protectorate over Egypt. The Khedive Star was given to those who participated in the Battle of Tel el-Kebir, a decisive victory for the British forces under General Sir Garnet Wolseley. Although the corporal is not wearing the actual medals in this painting, the ribbons are prominently displayed on his uniform, signifying his participation in these historic campaigns. The stable dress, which is the traditional uniform worn by farriers in the British Army, consists of a red jacket, white shirt, and blue trousers. The corporal's uniform is adorned with various insignia, including the regimental badge of the 3rd Dragoon Guards, a dragon and a crown, on his cap and collar. This painting offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of the British Army during the late 19th century, and the role of farriers in the military. The Egypt Medal and Khedive Star ribbons add an extra layer of significance to the image, reminding us of the important campaigns in which the 3rd Dragoon Guards took part.
