EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving depicts the historic coronation of King Kalakaua and Queen Kapi'olani of the Sandwich Islands, also known as Hawaii, in 1883. The coronation took place on April 21, 1883, at the Iolani Palace in Honolulu. The image shows the royal couple seated on their thrones, surrounded by their courtiers and dignitaries. King Kalakaua, dressed in traditional Hawaiian attire, holds a scepter in one hand and a mace in the other. Queen Kapi'olani, wearing a beautiful white gown and a tiara adorned with feathers, holds a fan. The scene is filled with a sense of grandeur and tradition, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the Hawaiian monarchy. The Sandwich Islands, named after the British explorer Captain James Cook, had been a sovereign kingdom since the late 18th century. However, in the late 19th century, the kingdom faced increasing pressure from foreign powers, particularly the United States. King Kalakaua, who came to power in 1874, sought to modernize the kingdom and strengthen its international relations. His coronation was a significant event in Hawaiian history, marking the height of the monarchy's power and prestige. This engraving, created by ILN (Illustrated London News), is an important historical record of the coronation of King Kalakaua and Queen Kapi'olani. It provides a glimpse into the culture and traditions of the Sandwich Islands at a time when they were still a sovereign kingdom. The image has been imported from Mary Evans Prints Online and is available for rights-managed use for educational, research, or other non-commercial purposes.
