This image depicts the tragic figure of Sophonisbe, a character from the renowned play "Sophonisbe" written by the French dramatist Pierre Corneille in 1663. The play is based on the historical account of Sophonisbe, the noble Carthaginian princess who, in an attempt to save her city from destruction during the Second Punic War, offered herself as a bride to the Roman general Scipio Africanus. The scene captured in this photograph is believed to be from the fifth act of Corneille's play, where Sophonisbe, having been betrayed by Scipio, takes her own life in despair.
