1850 1942 Arthur Braid Buttons Connaught

EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn (1850-1942), the third son of Queen Victoria, in full military regalia. The Duke served in the British Army for over sixty years, making him one of the longest-serving military officers in British history. In this image, he wears the uniform of the 3rd (The Buffs) Regiment of Foot, a unit with which he had a long association. The intricate details of the Duke's uniform are on full display, from the elaborate braid on his cap and the numerous buttons adorning his jacket, to the shining sword at his side. Arthur was born on May 1, 1850, at St. James's Palace in London. He was educated at home by private tutors and showed an early interest in military affairs. In 1868, he joined the Buffs as a second lieutenant and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a lieutenant colonel in 1885 and a full colonel in 1892. He served in various military campaigns, including the Second Anglo-Afghan War and the Second Boer War. The Duke's military career was not without controversy, however. In 1887, he was involved in a scandal involving his relationship with a married woman, which led to his resignation from the army for a time. He was later reinstated and went on to serve in various military and diplomatic roles, including as Governor-General of Canada from 1911 to 1916. Despite his controversial past, Arthur remained a popular figure among the British public, and his long military career cemented his place in British history. This photograph, taken in the early 20th century, is a testament to his dedication to military service and his status as a member of the British royal family.
